Teenagers 3.0 - the new report of NASK
Maria Zając
This short paper is a brief overview of the key findings of research on the use of the internet by Polish teenagers. Over eleven hundred of lower and upper secondary school students participated in the survey which was prepared by the scientists from the NASK National Research Institute. Collected data show that the most common means of accessing the internet is a smartphone. Almost half of the respondents (44.6%) declares they spend on the web between 4 and 8 hours daily, while another 12% confess to being online for more than 8 hours every day. Watching films and listening to music, along with social media activities are the most common reason for the online presence. Asked about the educational use of the internet 50% of the students admitted using the internet for homework, however, a more detailed analysis shows that young people more frequently look for the answers to the already solved problems and tasks, and not for the information they could use to solve the given issue on their own. It is also worth to mention that compared with the previous surveys (carried out in 2014 and 2016) the age when kids start to surf the internet changes quite fast. While in 2016 the starting point was 10 years, three years later it is 7 years. It seems plausible that such a lowering trend will remain in the coming years as well.
