Lifelong learning of the elderly from the biopsychosocial perspective

Oliwia McFarlane, Kornelia Kędziora-Kornatowska

Abstract

Currently, in the times of rapid transformations in all areas of human functioning, education has grown in importance. People, including the elderly, have been exploring the areas and actions that can help them adjust to new reality. In the view of a current situation and predicted demographic trends of modern societies, characterized by significant increase in the number of the elderly in general population, lifelong learning has become key issue. Based on the latest literature review, the article discusses the process of aging from two perspectives: challenges associated with changes on the biological, psychological, and social level, impacting both learning ability, and its effectiveness, as well as opportunities brought by participation in activities - especially of an educational nature - in old age.

Research reports indicate that normal aging, despite undoubtedly requiring adjustment of educational processes to functional capabilities of the recipients, does not pose an obstacle to engage in lifelong learning, and long term participation in non-formal, non-credit courses poses a particularly valuable strategy compensating changes resulting from the process of aging.
